IDT Energy FAQ

General

If I select IDT Energy® service, does my relationship with my utility company end?

No. When you choose IDT Energy, your utility will continue to deliver the energy to your home or business, provide customer service, bill you and respond to service emergencies.

Do I have to stay with my utility company?

Your utility owns the lines and meters, and delivers the electricity and/or natural gas into your home. They are responsible for billing, maintaining those lines, meters and poles as well as responding to any power outages, emergencies, needed repairs and any other issues.

Who is responsible for reading my meter?

Your local utility is responsible for reading your meter and billing. If you have a questions about the amount of energy you used or you would like your meter read – please contact your local utility.

Who is eligible to enroll in the IDT Energy program?

New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Illinois and Washington DC residents who live in an IDT Energy serviceable area have the right to shop for and choose their energy supplier. For more information please visit our utilities we service page.

Why should I switch to IDT Energy® service?

You do not have to switch to an alternative energy supplier, but you may be missing out on many of the added benefits companies like IDT Energy provide.

How can I better manage my energy bills?

Consider enrolling in a Budget Billing Plan. Some utilities will estimate your yearly energy costs and spread your payments evenly throughout the year. In other utility service areas, your energy supplier is responsible for doing so. Once enrolled in a Budget Billing plan, your monthly bill will still display your actual usage and the cost of your service for the billing period. The utility regularly compares your bills and payments, and if your Budget Billing amount is too high or too low, it will let you know and adjust the amount on your next bill. For more information or to enroll in a Budget Billing program, contact your local utility for more information.

How can I reduce my cooling and heating costs? How can I keep my bills down?

The best way to manage your heating and cooling costs is to conserve. For ideas on how you can stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer and save money on home energy costs, visit the IDT Energy Money-Saving Tips and Hints page.

Where does IDT Energy purchase their energy?

About IDT Energy

Who is IDT Energy, Inc.?

IDT Energy is one of the largest independent suppliers of electricity and natural gas serving the New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland , Illinois and Washington DC markets. We are a Retail Energy Provider or “REP,” and we work in cooperation with your local utility to supply the natural gas and/or electricity that it delivers to your home.

What is a REP or ESCO?

Often known as a “REP” (Retail Energy Provider), “ESCO” (Energy Service Company), “EGS” (Electric Generation Supplier), “TPS” (Third Party Supplier) or “ARES” (Alternative Residential Electricity Supplier). These are companies like IDT Energy that compete for your energy supply business. They may be small companies or large corporations that are registered with state regulators and compete to sell you electricity and natural gas.

How do REPs like IDT Energy work?

Your energy service is made up of two parts: supply and delivery. When you choose IDT Energy, we purchase the electricity and natural gas for your home or small business and supply it to your local utility. Your local utility company will continue to safely and reliably deliver that electricity and natural gas to your home over its network of pipes and wires.

IDT Energy Programs

What kind of price plans does IDT Energy offer?

IDT Energy offers three different types of price plans:

  • SmartFlex – IDT Energy® SmartFlex is a flexible variable rate program available in all the states we serve. Take advantage of Cash-Back rebates and offers based on the electricity and natural gas we supply. Rates are established on a (approximately) monthly basis based upon market pricing, transportation or transmission, and other market and business price related factors.
  • SmartBudget – A guaranteed or fixed-rate plan where the price per unit of energy supplied will remain the same for the length of the term of the agreement. The SmartBudget program is available in select areas, and we are working hard to expand it into new territories.
  • SmartFlex-Green – A flexible variable rate program that supplies electricity that is backed 100% by renewable energy credits and generated from renewable resources such as wind, sun and running water. This option is slightly more expensive than the SmartFlex program, but for a few cents more per kWh each month month, you can help keep the air we breathe cleaner, minimize ecological impact, encourage conservation, reduce our dependency on foreign oil and help promote creation of domestic jobs.
